Affiliate commission: what creators cost you per order
TikTok Shop’s engine is creators. When you open an affiliate plan you choose a commission percentage of the item price; creators who promote you earn it on every attributed order. Unlike the referral fee, this number is entirely yours to set — which makes it both your growth lever and your biggest margin risk.
Typical commission bands
| Your gross margin | Commission to consider | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Low margin (< 25%) | 5–8% | Volume play; expect fewer creators to pick you up. |
| Healthy margin (25–45%) | 10–15% | The marketplace sweet spot — competitive for most categories. |
| High margin (> 45%) | 15–25%+ | Aggressive growth; worth it while inventory moves. |
Don’t forget free samples
Creators usually ask for free product. If you send samples, amortize the cost per sale you expect them to generate (for example a $6 sample that drives 20 sales costs $0.30 per sale) and add it in the calculator’s creator sample line — it is a real cost of affiliate revenue, just not a platform fee.
The break-even way to decide
Open the calculator and look at the two cards under the breakdown: with affiliate and organic. If the affiliate card still clears your target margin, the commission is paying for itself in distribution. If not, lower the rate or raise the price — the break-even price tells you the floor.
